Le Miroir Fou

French Medieval Illustrator

We met Jade quite randomly visiting a Middle-age themed market in one of the few remnants of medieval Paris still standing - la tour de Jean-Sans-Peur, in the 2nd arrondissement.

There was a few other nice artists in this (admittedly quite niche) market, but Le Miroir Fou really made a huge impression on us.

It is mostly black & white, mostly ink on paper drawings, inspired heavily from Medieval imagery, mixed with a lot of influence of Witchcraft & Sorcery themes, and a big dose of Feminism, often sprinkled with acid humor.

Her drawings often incorporate texts written in a Medieval font type, often with very old french formulations to accentuate their humoristic tone, where "male tears" become "larmes de damoiseaux" - a french term we don't use anymore - and thrown into a cauldron by a witch somewhat resembling the artist herself.

A lot of the drawings like this are really funny.

And a good other half of them are beautiful, atmospheric drawings depicting Medieval architecture, witches and dungeons. Fantastic stuff.

On a different note, Le Miroir Fou is part of the "Femmes Obscures" collective of Artists, that works to showcase and encourage Women in what they call the "Dark Arts", with, well, Dark imagery & themes, where women are often overlooked.

We went to see their 2nd edition of the Festival they organized in Nantes earlier this year, and it was great !

Thank you for the talks !
